How you apply adhesive during EPDM rubber roofing installation determines a lot. First, it determines whether the roofing will stay in place and hold on for as long as is expected. Without applying adhesive properly, EPDM rubber roofing will not the durable and cost effective solution it should. Proper application of the adhesive is not something to do later. It is something worth doing right when installing this roofing system. A special kind of adhesive is required to adhere it properly and effectively on the surface lest it begins wearing off soon.
Here are a few tips to help you apply adhesive when installing EPDM rubber roofing.
Be Ready with the Right Equipment
First, you need all the tools and equipment required for installing EPDM rubber roofing. Be ready with these tools to avoid stopping or halting the installation right in the middle and running around from one place to the next looking for tools. It is important that you apply the adhesive as seamlessly as possible. This would not be possible if you lack some essential tools. Some of the tools are mandatory, but others you can use cross purpose. Therefore, the tools you must have ready before starting the installation include the following:
- 4-inch hand roller
- Safety glasses
- Tape measure
- Solvent resistant gloves
- Adhesive stirrers
Use Special or Normal Adhesives
Applying adhesive to hold EPDM rubber roofing in place requires special adhesives. The type of adhesive you use depends on a lot of factors. One of the most important determinants of what adhesive to use is the roof surface. Roof membrane is a basis for determining whether to go with a specific adhesive or consider some special ones. Verify this information with a professional roofer. However, any standard adhesive used for this purpose is capable of working well on all types of surfaces – which are either porous or non-porous.
Clean and Dry the Surface
Prior to applying the adhesive, your most important duty should be ensuring that the surface is spotlessly clean. The surface should be clear of grease, rust, and dirt. It should be free of moisture too. The roof should be clean and dry. Otherwise, the adhesive will not display the required level of efficacy. Without the required efficacy, applying the adhesive or laying the EPDM rubber roofing successfully will not be possible. Moisture that is trapped under the roofing membrane is capable of weakening the adhesive and making it less effective.
Apply the Adhesive
With the equipment ready, you are now ready to apply the adhesive. You have two options here. One is to apply the adhesive on the side of the RUSS strip. The other is to apply the adhesive on the exposed decking. The third option that is available to you is applying adhesive on the appropriate step-down or up stand termination. Alternatively, feel free to apply the adhesive of the membrane too. The task at hand does not end with applying the adhesive in the right place. The next task involves pressing the surfaces together against each other.
Press the Surfaces
Pressing the surfaces should be the last act. However, do not proceed with it unless you confirm that the adhesive is touch dry and contains no wet puddles. Check the area between the roofing membrane for voids too. The receiving surface deserves a bit of inspection to ascertain that it does not have voids as well. Now, it is alright to apply some pressure on the membrane. Rolling these areas is highly recommended to achieve the desired bond between the substrate and the rubber roofing membrane. Avoid stretching the roofing membrane when applying adhesive.
Therefore, follow these simple steps to apply adhesive during EPDM rubber roofing installation.
